Food Security and Agriculture: If We Grow Enough Food. So Why Does Hunger Still Exist?

When we talk about hunger, one solution seems obvious: produce more food.
More people means we need more food. If people are hungry, agriculture needs to produce more. Simple, right?
But when I first learned about food security, one thing really changed the way I looked at this problem: having enough food does not necessarily mean that everyone has enough to eat.
Over the past decades, the global supply of calories, protein and fat has increased. And yet hunger and malnutrition have not disappeared.
So perhaps the question is not only how much food can we grow?
Perhaps we should also ask: What are we growing, who can access it, and is it actually giving people what they need?
Producing Food Is Not the Same as Feeding People
Agriculture produces an enormous amount of food, but not everything grown on agricultural land goes directly onto people’s plates.
Some crops are eaten directly by people, while others are used for animal feed or industrial purposes. This is why I find the distinction between agricultural production, food production and nutrient production particularly interesting. They sound similar, but they are not necessarily the same thing.
A farm can produce a lot. A country can even have plenty of food available. But that alone doesn’t tell us whether everyone is well fed.
For me, this raises an important question about how we measure agricultural success.
Should producing the highest possible yield always be our main goal?
I don’t think it should.
Of course, productivity matters. Farmers need productive land, and a growing population needs food. But tonnes of crops produced per hectare tell us only one part of the story.
Imagine Living Next to Plenty of Food
Imagine a community surrounded by productive farmland and markets full of food.
There is technically no shortage.
But what if a family cannot afford that food?
Or the road connecting their village to the market becomes inaccessible?
What if they can afford rice or another staple every day, but not enough vegetables, fruits or protein?
And what if one drought, flood, or sudden rise in food prices changes everything?
This is where food security becomes much more interesting than simply asking whether there is enough food.

It is built around four connected ideas: availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability. Food needs to exist, people need to be able to obtain it, it needs to support a healthy diet, and that access needs to continue over time.
If one of these pieces is missing, producing more food may not solve the problem.
You Can Eat Enough and Still Be Malnourished
This is another part of food security that I think is often overlooked.
Hunger and malnutrition are not the same thing.
Someone can consume enough calories and still lack important micronutrients. This is sometimes described as “hidden hunger.” At the same time, malnutrition can also include undernutrition and overnutrition.
So filling people’s stomachs is not the only goal.
What we grow matters too.
A food system that produces huge quantities of calories but does not provide diverse and nutritious diets cannot really be called successful just because its production numbers look good.
Can Food Security and Agriculture Be Improved by Simply Producing More?
I don’t think the answer is that simple.
Agriculture itself depends on healthy soil, water, biodiversity, and functioning ecosystems. If we increase production today by degrading those resources, we may be creating a bigger food-security problem for tomorrow.
This is where approaches such as regenerative agriculture, agroforestry and better landscape management become interesting. Instead of looking only at how much a farm can produce, they ask how food production can work together with soil restoration, biodiversity, water management and more resilient landscapes.
This is also closely connected to the kind of work we explore at Restore the Legacy. In tropical landscapes, agriculture and forest restoration do not always have to be treated as two completely separate things. Agroforestry and regenerative farming systems, for example, can create productive landscapes while restoring trees and ecological functions to agricultural areas.
For me, this is an important part of the food security discussion. A productive farm today is not enough if the land can no longer support production twenty years from now. Food security is also about building agricultural landscapes that can continue producing food and supporting livelihoods under changing environmental conditions.
Maybe We Are Asking the Wrong Question
Food security has made me look at agriculture differently.
Of course we need to grow food. But growing food and feeding people are not automatically the same thing.
Food can exist while people remain hungry. People can consume enough calories while still being malnourished. Farms can become more productive while the ecosystems supporting them become less healthy.
So perhaps the big question for the future of agriculture should not simply be:
“How can we grow more?”
Maybe it should be:
“How can we grow better, and make sure what we grow actually contributes to feeding people?”
To me, that is what makes food security such an interesting concept. It connects what happens on a farm with nutrition, poverty, markets, climate and the environment.
And it reminds us that the success of agriculture should ultimately be measured not only by how much we produce, but by how well our food systems nourish people,
today and in the future.
